Ambassador a.h.

Eleftherios Anghelopoulos is Ambassador a.h. He joined the Greek Diplomatic Service in 1979.

He served as Ambassador of Greece to Georgia (2005-2007) and Ambassador of Greece to Canada (2010-2014).

Other positions he held include, Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Greece in Washington, D.C. (2002-2005), First Counselor at the Embassy of Greece in Moscow (1996-999), Consul of Greece in Houston, Texas (1990-1993) and Counselor responsible for International Development Cooperation at the Permanent Representation of Greece to the EU in Brussels (1983-1989).

In the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Greece, he was Director General for International Economic Relations, Director General for International Development Cooperation, Director of Balkan Affairs Department, Director of Diplomatic Office of the Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs and Head of Office of European Parliament.

He was Special Adviser at the Ministry of National Defence for European Union Affairs (2016-2018) , Chairman of South-East Europe Defence Ministerial Process (SEDM) during the Greek Chairmanship of SEDM (July 2017 - July 2019) , Chairman of RACVIAC’s Multinational Advisory Group-MAG (October 2018 - September 2019) and Director of the Diplomatic Office of the Minister of National Defence of Greece (2019 - June 2024).

Ambassador Eleftherios Anghelopoulos studied Law in the National University of Athens and holds an MA from the École des hautes études en sciences sociales, EHESS, Paris. He took graduate courses on International Relations at the University of Houston TX and on Negotiation Skills at Harvard University.

He received the following decorations: Commander of the Order of Merit (Portugal), Commander of the Order of Cedar (Lebanon), Grand Commander of the Order of the Phoenix and Grand Cross of the Order of the Phoenix (Greece), Grand Commander of the Cross of Recognition (Latvia), Chevalier de la Legion d’ Honeur (France).

He speaks English, French (fluently), Italian and German (intermediate).

He is married to Dr. Anastasia Anthi, MD and has one daughter, Marilena and one son, Dennis.
